Raumina cares deeply about children and has spent the majority of her life working with and now for them. As a former elementary school teacher, she has seen first-hand the impact family dynamics have on children and has made her life mission to advocate for their best interests.
As a McGill University student, she was honoured with the Scarlet Key, deemed “the most prestigious award at McGill to recognize and celebrate excellence in leadership.” From McGill, she learned how to bring together disparate ideas and be a voice for those who struggle to find their own. Raumina brought that same initiative and drive to the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law. She served as a first-year representative for her class in her first year, President of the Law Student Society in her second year and founded the Trial Lawyers Association of BC’s UVic Chapter in her third and final year.
One of Raumina’s most exciting law school opportunities has been on the Gale Cup University of Victoria moot team. The Gale Cup is a high-level mooting competition between all Canadian law schools. The competition involved extensive research, legal writing, and the incredible chance to practice oral advocacy in front of judges and justices from various levels of BC courts. Additionally, Raumina spent a term working at UVic’s Law Centre, which provides advice, assistance and legal representation to clients who cannot afford a lawyer. Raumina was responsible for files in criminal law, family law, residential tenancy law, and human rights law, among others. Raumina also served as one of the Law Centre’s representatives to William Head Institution, where she would meet bi-weekly with inmates, as well as assisted family duty counsel at the Western Communities Courthouse. She loved the experience so much that she came back to assist the Law Centre for the remainder of her time in Victoria.
