Raumina cares deeply about children and has spent the majority of her life working with and now for them. As a former elementary school teacher, she has seen first-hand the impact family dynamics have on children and has made her life mission to advocate for their best interests.

As a McGill University student, she was honoured with the Scarlet Key, deemed “the most prestigious award at McGill to recognize and celebrate excellence in leadership.” From McGill, she learned how to bring together disparate ideas and be a voice for those who struggle to find their own. Raumina brought that same initiative and drive to the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law.  She served as a first-year representative for her class in her first year, President of the Law Student Society in her second year and founded the Trial Lawyers Association of BC’s UVic Chapter in her third and final year.

One of Raumina’s most exciting law school opportunities has been on the Gale Cup University of Victoria moot team. The Gale Cup is a high-level mooting competition between all Canadian law schools. The competition involved extensive research, legal writing, and the incredible chance to practice oral advocacy in front of judges and justices from various levels of BC courts.  Additionally, Raumina spent a term working at UVic’s Law Centre, which provides advice, assistance and legal representation to clients who cannot afford a lawyer. Raumina was responsible for files in criminal law, family law, residential tenancy law, and human rights law, among others. Raumina also served as one of the Law Centre’s representatives to William Head Institution, where she would meet bi-weekly with inmates, as well as assisted family duty counsel at the Western Communities Courthouse. She loved the experience so much that she came back to assist the Law Centre for the remainder of her time in Victoria.

APPROACH

As an elementary school teacher, Raumina mastered patience and the ability to allow time and space for others. Raumina brings this child-centred focus to YLaw as she continues to look for opportunities to advocate for the best interest of children. The mix of her quirky personality and caring nature created opportunities for children to become the best version of themselves in the classroom; family law allows her to continue to have the same impact on children’s lives.

She has studied various forms of theatre and it taught her to be an exceptional communicator, whether in front of a large crowd or in an intimate conversation with one other person. Raumina is confident and poised regardless of if she’s standing in front of a jury, judge or opposing counsel. Theatre also taught her to be a great listener. Captivating theatre is not looking for opportunities to speak; captivating theatre emphasizes listening. Raumina has always been a great listener and you can be sure your voice will be heard when you sit down with her.

Personal life

Raumina was born in Vancouver, raised in the suburbs of Toronto, and has called Montreal, downtown Toronto, Victoria, and Vancouver home since. However, she is proud to now say that the west coast is, definitely, the best coast.

Raumina knew from the very beginning that she cared deeply about kids. Starting in Grade 5, when other students would go out for recess, she would volunteer in the Kindergarten classroom. Whether it was helping do up zippers or being a (big) friend where needed, she loved knowing that she had an impact on the lives of others.

Raumina has a mini poodle mix named Alfie, who is both very sweet and very smart. Yes . . . he does take after his owner. Raumina loves teaching Alfie new tricks, and they often spend their weekends zooming through dog agility courses.

Raumina believes strongly in the importance of community. During her time at McGill, Raumina started the first-year council for Faculty of Education students, ran the faculty’s mentoring program, planned three years of Orientation for incoming students, and was heavily involved in student politics.
