While on the search for her life’s passion, Afsana began working at a law firm as an undergraduate student and immediately discovered her love for family law. Afsana observed the raw struggles that family law clients often experience and the important role that a family lawyer can play in creating a path out of these difficult periods. This ignited a flame within Afsana as she realized that she wanted to be a part of the team that helped clients navigate these experiences. This guided Afsana along her career pathway to law school while also continuing her work in family law as a student, and eventually commencing her practice as a family lawyer. Afsana has practiced exclusively in family law since her call to the Bar.
Afsana’s practice comprises of all areas in family law, including parenting issues, interjurisdictional disputes, child abduction and relocation, property division and support issues. She has acted as counsel on matters in court and represented clients in mediation, arbitration and negotiations. Afsana has also worked with Indigenous community members in various First Nations across Ontario in her work with the Sixties Scoop Settlement before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. While in law school, Afsana worked at the University of Victoria Law Centre as a community caseworker in several areas of law, including family law, criminal law, employment law and human rights issues, representing clients in court, mediation and negotiations. She also worked with family duty counsel at the local courthouse in assisting self-represented litigants and as a family law advisor with the British Columbia Legal Services Society.
